      <image:caption>When we engage in a shared creative experience, we enter a different rhythm. Time softens, conversation deepens. In a couples Ikebana experience, partners are guided through the process of working with seasonal plant materials, and decisions are made together: which branch leads, where space is held, what feels balanced. This act of co-creation can naturally foster attunement to one another, respect for different ways of seeing and a shared sense of calm and presence. Very much some of the same qualities that sustain long-term partnership!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Experience Ikebana with your partner: Deep connection and lasting memories - Ikebana as a Reflection of Relationship</image:title>
      <image:caption>Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, honors asymmetry, impermanence, and the quiet dialogue between elements. Each stem retains its individuality while contributing to a harmonious whole. Sounds familiar? When practiced together, Ikebana strangely becomes a mirror of relationship itself. One partner may be drawn to bold movement, the other to restraint. One may respond intuitively, the other thoughtfully. In Ikebana, these differences are not to be corrected, they are integrated. The arrangement that emerges is not simply floral. It is relational.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>In addition to taking home beautiful floral arrangements that have personal meaning, couples often leave with a shared memory rooted in presence and beauty, a deeper appreciation for each other’s perspective and a sense of calm carried into daily life. The experience remains as a moment of true connection, and even after flowers and stems have withered, you can enjoy creating another Ikebana together, with this new common framework.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>An Ikebana experience is ideal for couples who are drawn to beauty found in nature and seasonality, and who appreciate moments of quiet intention. It will speak to those who value mindfulness, slowness, and presence, and who feel an affinity for Japanese aesthetics and culture. Whether you have shared decades together or are at an earlier chapter, a couple’s Ikebana experience offers a way to honor your relationship with authenticity and grace.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - The Timeless Art of Ikebana: Where to Learn in the East Bay</image:title>
      <image:caption>The word Ikebana (生け花) consists of two kanji characters: 生 (“ike”, meaning life or growth) and 花 (“hana”, meaning flower). Together, these characters mean "living flower”. Creating an Ikebana arrangement aims at giving a new life to flowers, after they have been cut from the plant. The story of Ikebana begins in Kyoto at the Rokkakudo temple (pictured left), founded in 587 C.E. by Prince Shōtoku, around the time Buddhism was introduced to Japan. Buddhist monks living in a small hut (“bo”) by a pond (“ike”) cared for the temple and came to be known as Ikenobo priests. Across Japan, these priests became known for creating ever more intricate floral offerings, and over the centuries, they developed and codified the art of appreciating flowers. The oldest existing manuscript describing Ikenobo Ikebana teachings (called Kao irai no Kadensho) is dated 1486-1499. During this period, the Ikebana creations of Ikenobo priest, Senkei Ikenobo (considered to be the first headmaster, and founder of the Ikenobo school), were highly praised by the people of Kyoto.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - The Timeless Art of Ikebana: Where to Learn in the East Bay - Tatehana and Rikka: The Ancestral Forms</image:title>
      <image:caption>Refined in the Muromachi period (~1336 to 1573), Tatehana became the norm for formal decorations not only in temples but also inside traditional Japanese homes, in the tokonoma (an alcove in the reception room). In the 16th century, the composition of Tatehana became more complex and a style called "Rikka" was established. In this style (pictured right), plant materials are used as symbols to depict natural scenery.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - The Timeless Art of Ikebana: Where to Learn in the East Bay - Shōka: Simplicity with Depth</image:title>
      <image:caption>While larger and larger Rikka arrangements continued to be displayed in reception rooms of castles or warrior’s residences, a smaller style of Ikebana emerged that was more suitable for tokonoma of smaller Japanese homes. This style, called Shōka, was developed in the 17th-18th century (pictured left is a traditional shōka with two materials: pussy willow and spray chrysanthemums). Shōka focuses on the essence and inner beauty of plants, and expresses their life force from the ground up. Because a Shōka arrangement can only have up to three different materials, it is simpler but also conveys the unique beauty and character of plants. The arrangement always contains three main elements: shin, soe and tai. All stems and branches are arranged in a straight line, so that when viewed from the front, all elements of the arrangement appear to emerge from the water’s edge (mizugiwa) as one single line.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - The Timeless Art of Ikebana: Where to Learn in the East Bay - Jiyūka: Free Style for Modern Times</image:title>
      <image:caption>With Japan increasingly turning to the West, new styles with fewer or no rules were created in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to adapt to contemporary Japanese life. While most Japanese people no longer have a tokonoma in their homes, they can still enjoy Ikebana for display in other parts of the house or apartment by creating Jiyūka. Ikenobo free style arrangements allow for more creativity and individuality while staying true to the principle of honoring the life and specific character within each plant. Currently, the Ikenobo School has numerous “outposts” around the world. In fact, the second Ikenobo Chapter outside of Japan was founded in San Francisco in 1963.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - The Timeless Art of Ikebana: Where to Learn in the East Bay - Why Learn Ikebana Today?</image:title>
      <image:caption>For many, Ikebana is more than a floral art: it’s a form of meditation. The careful selection of seasonal materials, the balance of form and emptiness, and the awareness of impermanence all invite a sense of mindfulness. Ikebana also connects us to nature in a profound way. Even a single branch or blade of grass can embody beauty and vitality when arranged with intention. Practicing Ikebana taught me that simply looking at a flower can ground us, and remind us of our own inner strength and beauty. For those seeking a meaningful hobby, self-care practice, or cultural connection, Ikebana offers endless depth to explore.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Preparing for your first Ikebana lesson - About 10 years ago, while I was in France on sabbatical, I spotted a poster at work about Ikebana classes. I was really excited to learn something I had always been drawn to, but I had no idea what to expect. I was told that flowers would be provided, and that I needed to bring my own kenzan, pruning shears and a vase. I didn’t really know what type of vase was appropriate… I did some Googling around, and got quickly overwhelmed by the variety of containers that can be used for Ikebana… I settled on a small bowl that ended up not being a good fit for the arrangement we were making. Thankfully the teacher had a few extra containers for students to borrow during the lesson.</image:title>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Preparing for your first Ikebana lesson - The lesson structure varies greatly from teacher to teacher. My late Sensei, Shuji Ikeda, didn’t have a set structure, and simply gave personal instruction to each student at their own level, one at a time, in a rotating manner. That was the best structure since he had students of greatly different experience levels. In other cases, the class will proceed with an introduction, a demonstration of the type of arrangement to be made, a time for everyone to create their arrangement, and then corrections by the teacher (some teachers give suggestions or make corrections while students are arranging, others wait until the arrangement is done before correcting). At the end of the class, you generally take a picture of your creation, then you tidy up your space and bundle your flowers to take home.</image:title>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Preparing for your first Ikebana lesson - Kenzan</image:title>
      <image:caption>Also called a “flower frog”, “pin frog” or “spiky frog” in English, a traditional kenzan consists of a heavy metal base with hundreds of sharp metal spikes fixed to the base. It is often used to secure flower stems and branches to create an Ikebana arrangement. Most teachers provide kenzans for you to borrow during the lesson, but some do not. Best to inquire ahead of time if it is not clearly stated in the class description. If you would like to create Ikebana at home, you will need to own at least one kenzan. They come in many different shapes and sizes, so it can be a little difficult to know which one to get when starting out.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Preparing for your first Ikebana lesson - Vase</image:title>
      <image:caption>If you do an image search online for “Ikebana vase”, chances are you will see a lot of small, round-ish ceramic vessels large enough to fit a very tiny kenzan, with 2-3 flowers arranged in them. Perhaps that is what most people think of, when they hear the term “Ikebana”... However, in the vast majority of cases, this is not the kind of vase you need when taking a beginner’s Ikebana class. An experienced Ikebana practitioner can create in just about any kind of vase or container. If you begin learning Ikenobo Ikebana, you will first be introduced to a type of arrangement called “Jiyuka” or “free style”. While there are many types of vases suitable for “free style”, I typically like to start with a wide-mouthed (~8 to 10 inches in diameter) and shallow container called a “suiban”. Again, many teachers will have containers for you to borrow during class, but if you’d like to recreate your arrangement at home, you will need to have an adequate vessel.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Preparing for your first Ikebana lesson - Pruning shears / flower scissors</image:title>
      <image:caption>Most gardening shears will work when starting your Ikebana practice. If you own a pair that you like to use, feel free to bring it to your lesson. Traditional Ikebana scissors (called “Hasami” in Japanese) are very sharp, pointy and do not have a spring mechanism. They take a bit of getting used to, but it’s definitely worth it if you’re planning to practice regularly. These shears allow for great precision when making cuts, and are versatile in their ability to cut thin stems to medium-sized woody branches.</image:caption>
    </image:image>

      <image:title>Bloom notes - Preparing for your first Ikebana lesson - Flowers and plant materials</image:title>
      <image:caption>As mentioned above, it is a good idea to let your teacher provide flowers until you feel more comfortable with picking your own materials. While it is true that one can arrange Ikebana with almost any material, one of the things that is often overlooked are the leaves. Except in very specific and limited cases, in Ikebana, leaves are just as important, if not more important, than flowers. So when selecting bunches of your favorite flowers at a grocery store, you will want to make sure the stems have nice, fresh-looking leaves. One example of a gorgeous cut flower that never comes with leaves is the Calla Lily. If you wanted to arrange Ikebana with Calla Lilies, you would need to purchase them as a potted plant.</image:caption>
